Conscious Talk Call to Action

Will You Speak Up For Seals? NowWill You Speak Up For Seals? Now
PETA -- For The Ethical Treatment of Animals

Tell Canada to End Its Shameful Seal Slaughter

For thousands of years, harp seals have migrated from Greenland down the coast of Canada, stopping each spring to give birth on the ice floes. Every year, a band of fishers descends on the ice to beat hundreds of thousands of seals to death and sell the animals' pelts on the international fur market. Sealers routinely hook baby seals in the eye, cheek, or mouth and drag them across the ice, often while the animals are still conscious. Many of the seals killed in the massacre are only a few weeks old.

Baby seals stand no chance against club-wielding seal hunters—pups must look on as fellow seals are bludgeoned to death only to then meet the same bloody fate. The commercial seal slaughter is an off-season profit venture for the fishing industry, and it accounts for less than 1 percent of Newfoundland's economy. The seal slaughter is not a subsistence activity for native peoples—Inuit sealing accounts for only about 3 percent of the annual slaughter.

The price of seal fur is plummeting as international outrage against the seal slaughter rises. The U.S. and the European Union have banned seal products, and world leaders such as President Barack Obama and His Holiness The Dalai Lama have denounced the massacre.

The annual seal slaughter will continue unless people like you speak out and take action to stop it, so please add your voice to the global outcry against Canada's shameful seal massacre. Please write to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Canadian ambassadors around the world to demand that they bring the massacre to an immediate end.

Please Speak Out Against This Horrible Slaughter!

Dead baby dolphins are currently washing up along the Gulf coast. Dead baby dolphins are currently washing up along the Gulf coast.
Greenpeace

But that hasn’t stopped the US government this week from issuing the first deep water drilling permit since the BP oil disaster. And they’re considering plans from BP and Shell to drill in the remote, pristine waters of the Arctic Ocean.

The truth is that scientists cannot say yet whether the dead baby dolphins are due to the BP disaster. In fact, scientists cannot say much of anything about the impacts of the BP oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico and its marine life because hundreds of millions of dollars set aside for research is stalled in government bureaucracy and BP backpedaling.

Here’s what the science journal Nature recently had to say:

"A fund of half a billion dollars for research into the effects of last year's massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has spent months mired in bureaucracy and political maneuvering, leaving scientists uncertain about how or when the money will be awarded."

The money for independent scientific research must be released immediately so we can know the truth. The US government agency responsible for stewardship of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), needs to step up and make sure this funding gets out the door now so scientists can independently investigate why baby dolphins are dying and look into all the other long-term impacts of the BP oil disaster.

Wolves Face Poison, Traps, and ErradicationWolves Face Poison, Traps, and Erradication
Defenders of Wildlife

Picture it: a young wolf painfully dying in a leghold trap; a wolf mother's pups gassed to death in their den; entire packs gunned down -- all the result of legislation now being considered in Congress that would eliminate even the most common-sense, science-based protections for wolves. Please make an emergency donation now to support our work to stop anti-wolf legislation in Congress and safeguard the future of wolves and other wildlife struggling to survive.

Cat's in Inhumane Medical ExercisesCat's in Inhumane Medical Exercises
PETA -- For The Ethical Treatment of Animals

Considered a top-tier institution of higher learning among many people, the University of Michigan ranks at the bottom when it comes to animal welfare.

During trauma training exercises in the university's Survival Flight course for nurses, cats have hard plastic tubes repeatedly forced down their windpipes and are frequently killed after the procedure. Also, pigs have holes cut into their limbs, throats, and chests and have needles stabbed into their bones and the tissue surrounding their hearts before they are killed.

Even more shocking is that the University of Michigan already uses state-of-the-art human-patient simulators to teach the same skills in other courses for nurses and physicians!

Please take a moment of your time to contact officials at the University of Michigan and other institutions that are tormenting animals and politely urge them to show compassion for animals by switching to modern and superior non-animal methods in their training courses.

Thank you for standing up for animals suffering in archaic medical training exercises!

Washington: Stop Factory Farming!Washington: Stop Factory Farming!
The Humane Society of America

Millions of egg-laying hens in Washington's egg industry are confined in cages so small they can't even spread their wings. Senate Bill 5487 is an industry-backed bill that would codify some of the worst types of extreme confinement on factory farms, by requiring that laying operations meet the certification standards of an industry trade group that supports battery cages.

Consequently, while Washington citizens are gathering signatures to qualify a ballot initiative to phase out the extreme confinement of laying hens, S.B. 5487 is an attempt to undermine the voters and only gives the illusion of reform.

Please make a brief, polite phone call to your state senator, Senator Cheryl R. Pflug (360) 786-7608 , and ask him or her to oppose S.B. 5487. And don't forget to send a follow-up message. Thank you for all you do for animals.

Stop The Bison SlaughterStop The Bison Slaughter
Defenders of Wildlife

Yellowstone's wild bison are on the move. Facing a harsh winter and scarce food, these magnificent animals will journey beyond our nation's first national park to an uncertain -- and potentially deadly -- fate.

It's outrageous -- these wandering bison could be shot on sight, rounded up for slaughter or harassed and chased to where food is scarce.

The horrific killing could begin in earnest in the coming weeks.

Help prevent the slaughter of Yellowstone bison. Donate now to help stop the slaughter, mobilize our dedicated activists and secure vital habitat to ensure a lasting future for these American icons.

It's a truly sad situation for some of the last, genetically pure wild bison in America.

Stop Alaska and Salazar From Killing Polar BearsStop Alaska and Salazar From Killing Polar Bears
Center for Biological Diversity

It's the final hours of 2010, and polar bears are in a state of emergency. Alaska has filed a legal motion to strike down their 120-million-acre habitat reserve. It is the largest imperiled species habitat reserve in history -- bigger than 48 of the 50 states, bigger than the entire U.S. national park system -- and Alaska is trying to eradicate its protections to drill for oil and gas.

Free Morgan! A Young Orca in Captivity Needs Your HelpFree Morgan! A Young Orca in Captivity Needs Your Help
Marine Connections, London

Morgan, a young wild orca, is currently being held in captivity in the Netherlands. She does not belong in a tank. She belongs in the ocean.

In late June, 2010, a young orca was seen in the Wadden Sea, off the coast of the Netherlands. The little orca appeared to be ill, so she was captured and brought to the Harderwijk Dolfinarium, a captive facility about an hour from Amsterdam. She was named Morgan. For the past five months, she has been living in a small tank at the dolphinarium.

The Dutch government permitted her capture on the basis that she would be rehabilitated and then released back to the wild.

On December 10, the dolphinarium announced that she should not be returned to the wild.

Morgan doesn’t belong in captivity. She belongs in the ocean.

Anyone who cares about orcas should insist that Morgan be returned to the wild. The final decision is in the hands of the Dutch government.

Morgan must be free

Frozen seas. Subzero temperatures. Massive waves. Over 1,000 miles away from the closest Coast Guard response center.

Bowhead whales, polar bears, seals, walruses, and other hardy Arctic marine animals make their home in the remote Chukchi Sea. But these same conditions are also a recipe for disaster in the inevitable event of an Arctic offshore drilling accident.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement is saying the US government has spent enough money on scientific research in the Chukchi Sea. But there are still large scientific gaps on how offshore oil and gas development will impact the environment and the animals and indigenous communities that rely on a healthy Arctic Ocean.

Protect the harsh but fragile Arctic home of whales and polar bears. Tell the US government - no offshore drilling in the Chukchi Sea »

Wildlife Conservation Society

Right now, only 3,200 tigers remain in the wild, including 1,000 breeding females. And 70 percent of these wild tigers occupy just six percent of their current range. World leaders and groups like WCS have a plan to help save these amazing big cats and their habitat, but we need the U.S. to recognize the great opportunity represented by this week’s Tiger Summit.

Please send a letter to Congress about the resolutions supporting the Summit. The time for us to act to save tigers is now. Make sure your Senators and Congressman get the message today.

Keep Big Oil Out of the Chukchi SeaKeep Big Oil Out of the Chukchi Sea
Defenders of Wildlife

Big Oil wants in… specifically, into the pristine waters of the Chukchi Sea.

Unfortunately, there is still no effective, proven technology to clean up oil spills in broken sea ice conditions in Arctic waters, such as those found in the Chukchi Sea... a problem that could doom endangered bowhead whales, threatened polar bears and other wildlife if drilling proceeds.

Speak out for polar bears and other Chukchi wildlife. Take action now.

Monumental Victory For Chickens!Monumental Victory For Chickens!
PETA -- For The Ethical Treatment of Animals

Imagine for a moment that you are a chicken in a U.S. slaughterhouse. As you make your way toward a violent death, you are dumped out of your crate and your legs are violently forced into shackles so that you are hanging upside down. In fact, there's a good chance that your legs will end up breaking?but no one will care. As you hang upside down, struggling to escape, you are dragged through an electrified water bath that's meant to paralyze you, not render you unconscious (of course, being rendered unconscious would be kind considering what will happen next).

A blade will cut your neck as the blood slowly drains from your body. If you're lucky, you'll lose consciousness. But many birds miss the blade and are still conscious during the final step of the killing process, when they are run through the scalding-hot water of a defeathering tank.
This is the standard method of chicken slaughter in the U.S., but in a monumental victory for chickens, a new, less cruel slaughter system that eliminates all these abuses is finally being implemented. Progress is slow, but it is happening at last.

Wolf haters are at it again! This time trying to get Congress’s help!

In the wake of our recent victory in federal court restoring life-saving protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies and Greater Yellowstone – a move that blocked this year’s planned wolf hunts in Idaho and Montana – regional wolf haters are encouraging members of Congress to take matters into their own hands.
